THE APEX STORY

Founded in 2014 by Matt Hale, David Lohmann, and Dr. Layla Lohmann, Apex has grown to be a leading group practice organization with over 250 providers serving over 200,000 active patients each year. From the beginning, Apex has remained focused on supporting the delivery of the highest quality care through a non-branded, private practice model centered around the long-term, doctor-patient relationship.

THE APEX STORY

Founded in 2014 by Matt Hale, David Lohmann, and Dr. Layla Lohmann, Apex has grown to be a leading group practice organization with over 250 providers serving over 200,000 active patients each year. From the beginning, Apex has remained focused on supporting the delivery of the highest quality care through a non-branded, private practice model centered around the long-term, doctor-patient relationship.

The initial idea that eventually became Apex’s Private Practice Reimagined® model came from a combination of David and Matt’s business background and Dr. Lohmann’s experience in the early part of her career. Like many practitioners today, Dr. Lohmann started her career at a large, branded DSO. The DSO was well run and provided Dr. Lohmann with the opportunity to practice without the traditional burdens of running a small business. However, her experience there highlighted the shortcomings of that branded model. Short-term patient relationships, highly prescriptive protocols, and a focus on production per visit were all elements that didn’t align with her personal care philosophy. Discussing this experience with David, Dr. Lohmann wondered why there wasn’t an organization that could provide what she was looking for as a dentist – a place that was patient-focused where she could practice with clinical independence but be completely supported on the business side. An organization like that would provide her with a home that aligned with her practice philosophy and values while also removing the traditional business burdens of private practice.

The idea clicked with David and Matt, and together, the three explored the opportunity to build a quality-focused dental group, blending the best attributes of private practice with the benefits of a group practice model. As Matt and David surveyed the industry landscape, they were struck by the situation the industry found itself in. At that time, younger dentists were searching for high-quality, employment-based practice options, finding very few. Dentists later in their careers were looking for a structured path toward retirement that allowed them to accomplish their goals while providing their patients with continued quality care. Apex was created to fill that void, acting as a bridge between these two groups and securing private practice values in the future of dentistry.

While the goals of Apex were always grand, none of the founders could have dreamed that in such a short period of time, Apex would become such a strong family composed of more than 500 teammates committed to delivering the highest standard of care and having fun while doing it.
